A Pitcher, an Envelope and a Smile

Kool-Aid began in 1927, when Edwin Perkins of Hastings, Nebraska figured out how to take the juice out of a bottled drink called Fruit Smack and leave only the flavor. What remained fit in a paper envelope, shipped for pennies, and turned back into a full pitcher with nothing but water and sugar. Nearly a century later the idea is unchanged — and this catalog gathers every current form it takes.

More than a drink

Ask around and you will hear the other uses: unsweetened envelopes tint play dough and yarn, flavor lip balm, and power science-fair volcanoes. That is why the classic packets stay in the lineup decade after decade — a quarter-teaspoon of concentrated cherry does a lot of things a bottled drink never could.
